History
With the National Sporting Club's long tradition of organising high profile sporting lunches and dinners, in recent years many of these functions have been held to celebrate the launch of a major biography autobiographies by key sporting personalities. With so many of the major publishers have bringing a host of star names to the Café Royal including the likes of Sir Jackie Stewart, Ian Botham, Nigel Mansell, Murray Walker, Francois Pienaar, Allan Lamb, Gianluca Vialli, Colin Montgomerie and Jimmy Greaves, the annual Sports Book Awards were created to celebrate the quality of sports literature produced every year.
The first British Sports Book Awards were launched by the National Sporting Club at its Café Royal headquarters back in March 2003, judged by a panel that has included the likes of respected sports journalists including Sue Mott of the Daily Telegraph, Matt Dickinson and Tom Dart of the Times, Mark Pougatch of BBC Radio Five Live, Mick Dennis of the Daily Express as well as other representatives of book retailers and sporting organisations. Since that day a wealth of great sporting achievers, writers and publishers have picked up numerous awards and recognition for their work in sports publishing.
Historically the awards have been made up of four categories - Best Autobiography, Best Biography, Best New Writer and Best Illustrated Title, with an additional award for Outstanding Contribution to Sports Publishing introduced in 2006 and Best Cricket Book and Best Football Book in 2007. This year we are pleased to add Best Rugby Book to the bill which is to be kindly sponsored by St Ives Group.
Over the years we have also enjoyed working with a number of sponsors who associate themselves with this prestigious occasion, with individual awards sponsors in previous years included WH Smith, Stora Enso, Sky Sports, the Times, Butler and Tanner, Virgin Books and Ladbrokes.
